Call To Action: Help Fight the Elimination of Arts Funding

March 17, 2017 Kelley Gibson News 0 Comments

The Cultural Alliance of York County works diligently to ensure that York is a place where the arts are an integral component of economic growth and development, tourism, education and everyday life, thanks to our many supporters and donors. Yesterday, the White House released its proposed budget to Congress officially recommending full termination of funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services for Fiscal Year 2018. This is the first American President in history to propose zeroing out all funding for the nation’s federal cultural agencies.

Supporting the arts is not a partisan issue when the math speaks for itself. In our local and state economy, federal arts funding plays a vital role in a cultural economy built on a system of federal stimulus. Federal dollars are used to leverage state, local and private funding that supports a complex network of arts organizations, educational entities, museums, libraries and public broadcasting affiliates. For every $1 in NEA funding, there is a return of up to $9 in jobs, tourism and economic development. The arts make up 4.2 percent of the nation’s GDP, more than the medical and legal industries combined. We need to let our elected officials know the importance of the arts to our communities.

How You Can Help:

This proposal is a blueprint and will be considered by Congress, but like all proposals, Congress will be considering their own budget priorities-and likely without much regard to the administration’s request. Over the next few weeks, members of Congress will begin to inform the House and Senate Appropriations Committees—which have jurisdiction over this area of federal spending—which programs they believe should receive funding in Fiscal Year 2018. Those committees will then strongly consider this information as they begin writing funding bills.

1). Take a few minutes now and ask members of Congress to support funding for the NEH, NEA, and IMLS for Fiscal Year 2018 by clicking the links below.
Ask your members of Congress to sign on in support of the Office of Museum Services

Support NEH and NEA

  1. Post on Facebook and Twitter to help rally national support to save the NEA, NEH, and IMLS. There is strength in numbers and your social media friends can help.

We will continue to share information and tools in the coming weeks as they are available.
