York, PA – The Cultural Alliance of York County is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Artist Innovator Awards, Michael Dugger and Ian Carroll; each of whom will receive a $10,000 cash prize. The award was presented publicly on Tuesday, November 28th at the Cultural Alliance of York County Annual Meeting at the Pullo Family Performing Arts Center.

The Artist Innovator Award was created to highlight and reward the exceptional level of artistic talent that exists in York County. The winners were chosen after a panel of peer reviewers and jurors from outside of York County, and in fact, across the nation, narrowed down the search to 6 finalists, and then to two winners from those 6.

About the Winners:
Southern Pennsylvania based artist Michael W. Dugger has been exploring his artistic narrative through the intentional manipulation of surface by meticulously layering and mechanically removing layers to reveal his surfaces. His professional work as a firefighter and paramedic for almost 20 years informs his painting in the subject of trauma and how “We” as a community interface with traumatic events, and how we either get stopped by them or gracefully move through them.

Ian Carroll is a multi-faceted folk street musician who may be best known for his unique foot percussion system. This consists of a self-designed two-sided Cajon, Canadian style seated clogging and bell use. This relatively simple design is the first of its kind but could be easily reproduced to fit anybody and has the potential to create any polyrhythm one would like with the feet alone.

The additional award finalists were:
Ian Carroll – Music
Marcos Repolle – Film/Video
Kate Brennan – Performing Arts
Michael Dugger – Visual Art
James Tompkins – Visual Art
Lizz Dawson – Literary
